Hope everyone else is doing well. For those who don't know, DC/Baltimore area, 21 inches is enough to literally shut us down completely. We have 30 inch drifts everywhere. The driveway and cars are just lumps! The big dogs are wary of the snow but are going out to potty and walk around for a couple minutes. They are not used to this kind of snow and don't know what to do - it is truly funny. I plan to introduce the puppies to the snow if the temperature rises a today. It is too cold for them just yet. I also need to shovel a play spot for them on the porch otherwise they would sink into the mass of snow! They are getting so big - eating me out of house and home. They also can drink an incredible amount of water. What goes in must come out.....I feel like all I do is "cook and clean" for the puppies! My house is falling apart. There are fur balls on the floor - horrors. My honey, Vince, says he has forgotten what a hot dinner is, except warmed up kibble.... These last two weeks are so busy with "puppy" activities and education! Saturday was a day full of one-on-one work and group work with the puppies in the upstairs rooms. They were hysterical to watch. They are so curious at this age but one has to be careful not to scare them. They are playing with tons of toys and objects. It is great to watch. We will aim to get out today if it warms up and some more play time with Dad and Mom again. I was hoping to have visitors this weekend but that didn't work out too well. Our photographer is snowed in too. I will attempt photos this weekend (God help us....) and we will have to wait to next weekend to get good photos! Hopefully they will have the snow in check by then!!!! BE SAFE!!! More to come later...

12/17/09 - 6 Weeks Old!!!

Hard to believe the pups are 6 weeks old today! They are full of energy - wish I could run them around outside to work it off. It is still to cold for them. Next week we will get them out for a few short visits outside. They have been exploring the main floor of our home and enjoying playing with Vince, the big dogs and me. It is a riot to watch them chase the big dogs around the room. The big ones are almost scared of the pups. Sassy and grandma Sequoia herd them up and mother them. It is fun to watch. They are playing hard, biting and chewing and rough housing right on schedule! I have to cut their nails every week now too. Boy they are growing up fast. The pups had a poop check at the vets, all is great- no problems. We go in on the 28th of December for our final check up, chipping and first shots. That should be a sight - all eight of them running all over the vets office! January 1 we are scheduled to do the LER - Litter Evaluation Report. Nancy Schmidt, Bearpaw Shilohs, has graciously offered to be our evaluator for this event. The puppies will be ready to go home on Saturday and Sunday (Jan 2&3). That is only two more weeks!!!!! Time is flying. Please call if you have questions or concerns and to confirm your pickup times. We like to dedicate our time to one client and puppy at a time. Talk Soon!!!!

12/6/09 - Puppies everywhere!

Now I remember week 4 and 5 - this is the truly mobile period. They are just discovering their legs and going everywhere. Some of them are trying to climb out of the x-pens while others figure just screaming gets attention by me! They all want to be held (at the same time of course) and if ignored too long, they nibble on your toes! Did I mention to never go barefoot with puppies? Now is the time we start to convert from bedding to paper! We also break up the X-pen space into a figure "8" so that I can clean in peace. We are converting to solid foods now. Many things are changing for these curious and investigative puppies! Photos will be up hopefully by Wednesday this week. Jacki our website manager is recovering from surgery. Please say a prayer for her quick healing!

12/1/09 - 3 Week Photos are Posted

Just a quick reminder that the 3 week photos are posted on the Puppy Photos page. Now we have sharp little teeth that really put a damper on feeding time for Sassy. She is a trooper- better her than me - 8 sets of teeth chomping down at once - OUCH! The puppies are in their new digs in the den and loving the space. Momma Dog is loving the new freedom from 24 hour puppy milk machine service to on-call:) We are starting to feed them by fingers the puppy formula for weaning. They seem to like it but don't understand yet how to eat it. This comes with lots of patience and time. We will be practicing all weekend. I have my airbed setup next to their new X-pen. Sassy will sleep with me so she can wake me for feeding times. Like 8 crying puppies wouldn't wake you up..:) They are changing so rapidly - it is truly exciting! The puppies are looking great. Momma is looking a little tired but jumps right in the box to feed them. To save her from those wicked teeth that are developing, I started them on a baby gruel formula today. It will take them a little time to teach them how to eat it but they seemed to enjoy it. I had it all over my arms, hands, shirt, face (puppy kisses).....we were a sight to be seen! Sassy came in and cleaned everyone up and finished the formula. I have enclosed pictures taken after our feeding session- they went right to sleep! I needed a nap too!!! Walking skills are improving. Everyone is up and moving, some more steady than others! They sort of look like me since I tore my Miniscus in my left knee just before the puppies were born. We all walk about the same! I am waiting until after puppies go home to their new homes before I do the surgery. I don't want to miss a minute with them right now!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone - I know I have so much to be thankful for. Some are a little shaky and others are pretty steady. All are trying to walk on all four legs. It is so adorable to watch as they hesitantly take a step and roll right over onto their sides. All puppies are really gaining weight now. Momma Sassy is nursing them like a trooper even though they have teeny tiny sharp claws that I am cutting regularly. Once their teeth start, watch out Sassy!! I think we will move the puppies next weekend to the large space in our Den. We use multiple X-Pens to provide them with a large area to play and sleep in. I get the privilege of sleeping on the floor between a desk, two doors and the X-Pen. A little cramped to say the least but it allows for more room for the puppies and my constant monitoring of them. I can't believe on Thursday they will be three weeks old! Time flies.... Keep checking the puppies photos page for our weekly updates by Monday!

Surprise - Their Eyes are Open!

Had a great suprise this morning - the puppies have opened their eyes over night! Time flies.... They are getting so large and mobile! They are standing on 4 feet now but not making much distance yet. Their eyes should be opening any day now. They are developing sounds sort of like barking. They can really get around the whelping box to chase Momma Dog Sassy for a quick drink! Sassy keeps doing head counts and checking the puppies regularly. It is hard to tell with these photos but notice the size increase over two weeks - it is truely amazing. The changes in the next two weeks are startling - they become little "dogs." This weekend we will have our first official visitors to see the puppies. If anyone else would like to visit, please call me at 410-590-7765. We can arrange a time over the weekend for a quick peak!

Have a great day!

Sunday Nov. 15

The puppies are really moving out. They are trying to stand up on four legs now. Nobody has mastered it yet but they are really giving it the college try.... They are quite vocal - can't get a word in on them. They just hum along while drinking and let me know they want a drink by yelling. It is so cute. I think I almost heard a tiny bark today too but I can't swear to it. We had a busy day with being handled by a couple people who helped bring them into this world. It was very exciting. Sassy was a great momma dog and let everyone in the whelping room. She seemed to be thrilled that we had come to visit her and her puppies! We also took our 1 week portrait photos (really day 11 photos but who is counting....). I hope to give them to the webmaster tomorrow to post for everyone to see. They are not very animated in this photo session, mostly yawning and sleeping. But wait to see the change in the next two weeks of photos!!!

So everyone have a great week, check for photos on Monday/Tuesday.

Friday 11/13/09 - Quick Update

It maybe my imagination but these little pups are starting to try to stand on all fours and crawl. Seems so early....I just love them at this stage. They are so bound and determined to get to Momma for a quick meal! Soon in a week or two, they will be crawling out of the whelping box and I will be chasing them heading for the "border" (baby gate in our case). Sassy is being one great Momma Dog - she has the patience of a Saint with these hungry little pups. She can lay there all day and night feeding them. This Sunday we will do our first real photo shoot and I hope we will have much better ones then I take!!! Hope to have them posted by Monday.

1st Week Snap Shots

Well the puppies are 1 week old today. All are gaining weight and growing before my eyes into puppies! They squak when they are unhappy, they mummer when they are nursing. It is such a wide range of sounds and demands! Keeps me on my toes. I think they are just starting to balance themselves for walking. They get up on all fours then fall over. It is so cute. Soon they will be running around the whelping box looking for an escape route to the rest of the house! Their eyes are still closed but this too shall change really soon. It has been a long week with little sleep but I have loved every minutes of it. It is a true joy and privilege to raise these precious puppies. I hope to catch up this week with more sleep and many naps. Sassy has turned out to be an excellent momma dog. I have no needs to worry about her and the puppies. She will nurse just one puppy until it is done - what a trooper. Here are a couple photos from this past week. Hope you enjoy them. Puppy Photos for week 1 will be taken on Sunday and hopefully posted by Monday. Keep checking the Puppies Photos bullet on the right side of the Webpage Puppy Announcement.

Check out website Weekly for photos

Don't forget to check out the website each week for our Weekly Photo Album. It is under the button on the RIGHT side that says "PUPPY PICTURES" next to photos. The first day photos are now posted for all to see. Still look like little sausages with legs but so adorable!!!! The blue flowers are for BOYS and pink flowers are for the girls. Forgive my lack of profesionalism with the camera. Point and shoot is as good as it gets until I get some photo help!

We had a good night. All slept some, ate some and cried some! It was perfect! Now if only I could start to sleep a little more..... Sassy is really a great momma dog. She is so gentle with them. One starts to cry she is all over them! They get a thorough bath, a talking to and a little milk. They started to arrive late on 2 November and finished arriving around 3:00am on 3 November. Most of the puppies were just over 1lb. We have 4 girls and 4 boys. 2 of the girls are sables. The rest look like duals (all have "socks"). It will be fun to see what they develop into. Sassy did a super job delivering all of these puppies - what a trooper! As tradition, we will name all of the puppies after trees so that they will be part of Sequoia's Forest! It will take a little time to decide the right name for each one. Well, puppy duty is calling. I will post more later this week with a couple photos of the whelping!

Tuesday and getting closer....

No puppies yet (9:30am) but she is definitely in prelabor. Sassy is getting a little antsy but no movement to whelping yet. I think the Vet maybe right - she suggested Tuesday or Wednesday. All of the dogs are enjoying the extra time with Vince and I. Lots of but scratches and ear scratches! They all got fresh out of the oven turkey breast for snack this morning - they loved that. Sassy is eating very small meals so I am feeding her 4 times a day plus snacks. She is as big as a house! Looks like 20 puppies - can't wait to see them all. I will post when it looks like whelping day and after all has quited down after whelping. Hope everyone had a good Halloween!

XRAY TIME - GUESS HOW MANY PUPPIES!

We did our xray last night. This is Sassy's favorite time of year. She is sitting out in the middle of the yard Queen of her domain. She is surrounded by her cherished collection of balls and fellow pack mates. The exciting news is that she is finally looking pregnant. He little pouchy belly is starting to show! She is certainly acting pregnant. She has been off her kibble, on her kibble, then off again. She lost 6 pounds the first month and has finally gained it back. Morning sickness - yucky - yes dogs get it too! She is doing super. I think she will be an excellent mommy dog. I will post more as we get closer to deliver day - approximately Nov 2.

Hope this note finds everyone enjoying this great fall weather!

Sassy/Malachi :Coming November 2009

Malachi/Sassy
this breeding has taken place
(puppies anticipated November 4, 2009)

rbCHptd CJ's Prince Malachi of Babbling Brook aka Malachi
b. Their temperaments should be medium soft to medium. We are expecting good health, great hips, beautiful broad heads, good height and good movement. Both "Sassy" and "Malachi" have been described as being extremely gentle and both are cuddle bugs (official dog term!).

Malachi is a big sweet loving boy with great presence and size. He is a gentle, intelligent Shiloh Shepherd with an excellent temperament. He is the clown of the family and loves to play. Malachi is a remarkable male!

Sassy is as happy-go-lucky as any dog we have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She is daddy's girl and jumps in his lap everytime she can to prove it. She has been a regular momma dog to our puppies and herding them and helping to raise them. Sassy loves to move the pack around the yard, herding is in her blood. She also loves children, our pet sitter brings his 2 year old over just to play. Their temperaments should be medium soft to medium. We are expecting good health, great hips, beautiful broad heads, good height and good movement. Both "Sassy" and "Coz" have been described as having great sense of humor and both are cuddle bugs (official dog term!).

Coz does everything with a smile. His personality is sweet and happy. He is a true clown. He shows flash and pizzaz in the show ring and has a natural ability to herd. At 18 months he took one of 3 dwarve horses and herded him out of my arena and into his stall, a distance of 150 ft. He has passed all of his health testing with OFA excellent hips.

She is a joy to be with and always brings laughter with her.

Please check out our website for more pictures and information. We look forward to hearing from you! Needless to say this means what goes in must come out!!!! Clean up in aisle 2 is my regular routine. We are getting our visit to the vet scheduled since 8 weeks is almost here...Today we are getting our first bath! They need it too! We will cut nails also for a whole day of beauty!

The LER is scheduled for 17 May - just two more weeks - time flies. First four escaped the whelping box, then two more followed later - it is a joy to see them learn and grow. This week they began to eat solids - Sequoia is doing the happy dance - we ate a double portion of 2nd Stage formula today at dinner! They are growing like weeds with fertilizer! We started to play with each other and with baby toys! They have learned to "ruff" and sort of bark. Vince is teaching them how to howl.....maybe not such a good idea since I sleep with them.....but all good Shilohs know how to howl together! Sorry about the delay in getting the pictures up for week 3. They are now up so go check them out. This weekend will be the puppies first visitors. This ought to be fun! And last but not least, we will move from the bedroom whelping box to the puppy room where they will have lots of room to play and grow. A full week if I may say so! The enclosed photos are of them eating their first solids.

Thanks-Heather

3 week photos...

The puppies are growing so quickly. Today two decided to jump ship and leave the whelping box! Yesterday we had to go searching for a runaway puppy. She was sharing Sequoia's bed! All cuddled up in the blankets. Too cute for words. This weekend we started the 2nd Stage - which is a food/milk product for inbetween momma's milk and real food. It didn't go over to big. They prefer Sequoia's milk hands down! Can you blame them? Today's eating was a little better. It is a gradual slow process and when they are ready - they are ready! Tuesday is nail clipping night - oh boy....this is true precision work. Their nails are so tiny but oh so sharp. It is hard to believe that they are going to be 4 weeks old this coming weekend. Soon we can have visitors! BTW - The pictures should be up by Tuesday. Sorry for the delay.

Thanks-Heather

Almost 3 Weeks Old.....

What a busy week! The puppies can see, hear and smell. They had their first toe nail trim. That was incredibly hard - they are soooo tiny but sharp! The grew out of their collars - all of them are about 4 lbs each. They are trucks- they never stop moving, even in their sleep. Sleep, what is that? They stay up all night talking and screeching. They can wake you up from a dead sleep. They are developing personalities now. They are starting to play fight too. Their walking skills are much improved. They can go a couple steps without falling now:) It is a marvelous time of growth. Can't wait to see the photos for this weekend. I hope to have them up by Sunday evening. I have posted two update shots of the crew hard at play and with Momma. Just look at how large they are in two weeks!

Almost 2 weeks old....

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_WRsvNKQJdu8/R_ejdkvr7lI/AAAAAAAAAAc/3UFKGnECa3w/s320/DSC01118.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185793224415637074" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_WRsvNKQJdu8/R_ejeEvr7mI/AAAAAAAAAAk/oW-1F_9EAj0/s320/DSC01122.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185793233005571682" />
Ahhhh the smell of puppies! And the noise of puppies! They are just full of themselves as they change. Their eyes are open fully. Their hearing has just started to come apparent. They all weigh over 3lbs!! They are all a rich dark black with coloration on their feet and lower legs. Two have stars on their chests in white. Some have the facial markings coming through. It is all so exciting. Tomorrow we take our two week photos. These are hard - they still look like black moving blobs....pardon the expression. Hard to get much character in each shot but our fellow Sequoia Shepherds Shiloh owner (Basso - 1st Litter) photograher Julie Davison does a fantastic job. Sequoia is not the biggest fan on photo time and gets very possessive of the puppies! I can't wait to see the results. In the meantime I am posting a couple (if I can figure it out) shots.

Thanks-Heather

Eyes are just starting to open...

Hi,

I am back to work one day and they decide to open their eyes today! What a great suprise to come home to. They have tiny slits opening up to huge dark eyes. Nature is amazing to watch. They are increasing gradually in weight as expected. I spent a couple minutes at lunch today playing with them - never get enough puppy smell! Then had to return to work. Everyone at work is following their progress as well. It is great to have a cheering section! They are still working on walking on four legs. I will have photos as soon as possible. We will do more photos of all the puppies this weekend. We had some noisy puppies last night - they kept me up with their cries of woe....I wish I could figure out what they were saying! I will have two more precious days to spend full time with them. Wednesday I go back to work for a 7 hour work day with a 2 hour break to run home to take care of the puppies and Sequoia mid-day. I am trying to get a photo to put in the blog - but they fall over so quickly:) They are growing like weeds - right on schedule. No weight losses just constant gains. Sequoia's water broke around 5 pm on Saturday 22 March. The first puppy (a girl) was born at 9:10pm. Then they continued until around 1am 23 March. We had a break in the birthing process so around 6 am 23 March we went to the Emergency Clinic for xrays and a fetal heart monitoring. All were a go so we did a "pit" shot. We completed our deliveries by Noon on Easter Sunday! It was fantastic. Sequoia just laid down and pushed out the next puppy - she was a Champion!

All puppies are healthy, large and vocal! I have not had any sleep since Saturday. So forgive this blog's typing.... I sleep in the same bedroom as the puppies - or try to - they can scream even at an early age when they get hungry! No shy retiring puppies in this litter!

Sequoia is being an excellent momma dog. She is really taking care of these puppies and feeds them it seems like 24 hours a day. It is going to be so much fun watching them grow.

Speaking of growing and watching - we are doing our Easter Photos on Thursday. I hope to get them on the website by Sunday. Call if you want to hear puppy's talking! It is so cute..... Our first litter was a huge success and we are expecting even greater things from this litter.

Well I have to go finish "fixing" or as Vince calls it "my neurotic rearranging" of the whelping room. We are just so excited. The next entry will hopefully be this weekend with news of lots of healthy puppies!!!!

Thanks-Heather

Puppies Confirmed!

Puppies have been confirmed by ultra sound today.
